## Plans and set-up

**What is free and what is paid?**
Forever Free: salary structures and the monthly payslip, for up to 5 employees. **Basic** adds income tax worked out, the month on one screen (register and bank sheet) and payslips on WhatsApp and email. **Pro** adds PF, ESI and professional tax, the filing files, Form 16 Part B PDFs, arrears, loans and salary advances, reimbursements, leave encashment on exit and checks before you issue. **How are paid plans charged?**
Per employee per month, with a minimum of 5 employees.

**Does it need MJX HR?**
Yes, and it comes with it. See [MJX People](people/index).

**Where do I start?**
Open **Payroll** and follow **Get payroll ready**. See [set up payroll](payroll/set-up-payroll).

## Salaries

**Can I set salaries from a CTC?**
Yes. Type the **Annual CTC** and use [[Start with the usual split]] or a saved template. See [salary structures](payroll/salary-structures).

**How do I give a raise from an earlier date?**
Propose it on **Revisions** with a back-dated **Starts from**. Approving puts the months already paid at the old figure on **Arrears** (Pro), and the next payslip pays them.

**Who can see the owner's salary?**
Only the owner. Admins cannot see or change what an owner or another admin is paid.

## Pay runs and payslips

**Does creating a pay run pay anybody?**
No. Approving the pay run issues the payslips. You pay through your bank and then press [[Record payment]].

**Can two people be required to run payroll?**
Yes. On **Pay runs**, choose **Two people — whoever prepares it cannot approve it**.

**Does payroll read attendance?**
Unpaid leave is docked when you switch docking on. Absent days from the attendance register come off as loss of pay only with **MJX Attendance Pro** and the register option ticked. A day nobody marked is never counted.

**Can payslips have a password?**
Yes — the first 5 letters of the PAN in capitals plus the day and month of birth.

**Where do employees see payslips?**
On **My payslips** on the web, or the **Payslips** tab of the MJX People app. See [the People app](people/people-app).

## Income tax, PF and ESI

**Can an employee switch regime mid-year?**
No. The choice is made once per financial year and fixed until 31 March. The owner can reset one person's choice once a year, with a reason.

**Do you fill in PF and ESI rates?**
No. You type your own rates; the screen shows the usual figures only as hints. Ask your CA what applies to you.

**Do you file returns on the government portals?**
No. "Government portals do not let any outside software file for you: they need your own login and captcha." MJX Payroll makes the exact files; you upload them and type back the reference number. See [PF, ESI and PT](payroll/statutory-pf-esi-pt).

**Is Form 16 made for me?**
Form 16 **Part B** is filled from the issued payslips and the tax working, and you can type over any line. Part A comes from TRACES. See [income tax and TDS](payroll/income-tax-and-tds).

## Security

**Are bank account numbers safe?**
They are encrypted the moment you save them. Screens show only the last four digits; the full number appears only in the bank-transfer sheet.

**Is the PAN shown on screen?**
Only its last 4 characters.

### Does MJX Payroll need MJX HR?

Yes, and it comes with it. A salary is paid to a person whose record and leave live in MJX HR.

### Does Pathshala pay the salaries?

No. Pathshala does not move money. Download the bank-transfer sheet, pay through your bank, and record the payment on the pay run.

### Can I change a payslip after it is issued?

Not in place. An issued payslip is fixed. Withdraw it, correct the salary or leave, and issue the month again. The withdrawn slip is kept on record.

### Are payslips sent on WhatsApp?

Yes, on MJX Payroll Basic and above. When you approve a pay run or issue a month, each person can be sent their payslip PDF on WhatsApp and by email.
