Pathshala charges for WhatsApp **template messages** — the messages your institute starts, such as fee reminders, absence alerts and broadcasts. Each one is charged once WhatsApp confirms it was delivered, at the rate for its category, plus **18% GST**. **Sign-in codes are free — paid by MJX.** Replies inside a conversation the other person started are free. You see and pay the bill on the **WhatsApp usage** page.

The page lives at `/billing/whatsapp`. The same figures appear on **WhatsApp Settings** in the card **Your WhatsApp bill**, with a **See every month** link and a pay button.

## What is charged, and what is not

| Charged | Not charged |
|---|---|
| Template messages sent for your institute, on the MJX number **or** your own number | Kinds of message MJX pays for — **sign-in codes** (Authentication) by default |
| | Replies inside a chat the other person started (including AI replies) |
| Counted when WhatsApp confirms **delivery** | Messages that failed |
| At the rate in force **when it was sent** | Messages WhatsApp itself says are free |
| | Messages to people who opted out (they are never sent) |
| | MJX's own messages to you |

The bill's own words: *"Every WhatsApp template message sent for your institution — on the MJX number or on your own number — is charged at the rate in force when it was sent, once WhatsApp confirms it was delivered. A message that failed is never charged. 18% GST is added to each month. Chat replies are not charged. Kinds of message MJX pays for (see below) are counted but never on your bill."*

## Who pays for which kind of message?

MJX decides, for each category, whether MJX pays or your organisation pays. Today:

| Category | Who pays |
|---|---|
| **Authentication** (sign-in and verification codes) | **MJX** — free for you |
| **Utility** (receipts, reminders, alerts) | Your organisation |
| **Marketing** (offers, announcements, broadcasts) | Your organisation |

The page says it at the top, for example *"Sign-in codes are free — paid by MJX. They are counted below but never added to your bill."* In **How messages are charged** a free category reads **Free — paid by MJX**, and each month shows how many messages MJX paid for. A change by MJX applies to messages sent from then on; it never changes a month already billed.

## What does each message cost?

The section **How messages are charged** shows the current price per message for each category:

| Category | Used for |
|---|---|
| **Authentication** | One-time codes — a sign-in code, a verification code |
| **Utility** | Something that happened: a receipt, a fee reminder, an absence notice, a result |
| **Marketing** | Offers, announcements and anything promotional |

Marketing costs more than Utility and Authentication. MJX sets the rates; the page always shows the ones in force. It also says when counting began — messages sent before then are not on the bill.

## How to read the WhatsApp usage page

- **Amount due** (or **Paid in advance**) — everything billed, plus GST, minus everything paid. *Includes 18% GST.*
- A **pay-by line** — for example *"Pay by 12 Nov 2026 — after that, WhatsApp messages stop and your account is suspended until it is paid."*
- **This month** and each earlier month — messages by type with their amounts, then **Messages**, **GST 18%** and **Total**. A **Not charged** line counts messages waiting for delivery confirmation, free by WhatsApp, paid by MJX, or with no price set, and a line says how many went out on your own number.
- **Payments** — each payment with its date, amount, GST and a **Tax invoice** link.

If you have not sent any template messages yet, the month section says **No template messages yet**.

## How to pay the WhatsApp bill

1. Open **Sidebar › Settings › Billing › Subscription & billing › WhatsApp usage**, or press **Pay ₹… to MJX** on the **Your WhatsApp bill** card in WhatsApp Settings.
2. Press [[Pay ₹… now]].
3. Pay by card, UPI or net banking in the Razorpay window.

> [!SUCCESS]
> You see "✓ Paid ₹…. Thank you." and the page reloads with the new balance. A **Tax invoice** appears under **Payments**.

If the payment window closed but money left your account, it is recorded automatically. Amounts under ₹1 are carried to your next payment. If there is nothing to pay, the page says *"There is nothing to pay right now."*

## What happens if the bill is unpaid?

| Days since the oldest unpaid charge | What happens |
|---|---|
| 0–15 | Everything works. The page shows the pay-by date. |
| More than 15 | WhatsApp messages from your account **stop**, and your account is **suspended** until the bill is paid. Owners and admins who sign in are taken to the WhatsApp usage page. |
| Paid | Messages start again at once, and the suspension is lifted. |

While stopped, a refused send carries: *"WhatsApp messages from this account are stopped: the WhatsApp bill of ₹… has been unpaid for more than 15 days. Pay it from Billing → WhatsApp and they start again at once."*

> [!IMPORTANT]
> The stop covers every template message sent for your institute — reminders, alerts and broadcasts alike. Paying your plan does not lift a pause caused by the WhatsApp bill; pay the WhatsApp bill itself.

Sometimes MJX waives part of a bill or does not charge an account; the page then says *"MJX has waived ₹… of this bill"* or *"MJX is not charging your account for WhatsApp messages. They are still counted below."*

## Who can see and pay it?

Only an **owner** or **admin** can open the WhatsApp usage page and pay. Other staff see the **Your WhatsApp bill** card on WhatsApp Settings with *"Ask an owner or admin to pay this."*

The WhatsApp bill is separate from your plan. For your plan, see [Plans and billing](account/plans-and-billing).

## Questions people ask

### Which WhatsApp messages are charged?

Only template messages sent for your institute — reminders, alerts, broadcasts — on the MJX number or on your own number. Sign-in codes are free, paid by MJX. Chat replies, including AI replies, inside a conversation somebody else started are not charged.

### Are sign-in codes charged?

No. Sign-in and verification codes (Authentication messages) are paid by MJX. They are counted on your WhatsApp usage page but never added to your bill. Marketing messages and broadcasts are on your bill.

### Is a failed message charged?

No. A message is charged only once WhatsApp confirms it was delivered. Failed messages, and messages WhatsApp itself marks as free, are never charged.

### Is GST added?

Yes, 18% GST is added to each month's charges.

### What happens if I do not pay?

The page shows a pay-by date 15 days after the oldest unpaid charge. After that, WhatsApp messages from your account stop and your account is suspended until the bill is paid. Paying switches everything back on at once.

### Do I pay Meta directly when I use my own number?

No. MJX pays Meta and bills you on this one WhatsApp bill, for the shared number and your own number alike.
